The Day-Ahead Market (MGP)<\/strong> is the main venue for electricity trading in Italy. Managed by the Energy Markets Operator (GME)<\/a>, this market allows for the definition of the price and quantities of energy to be produced and consumed the following day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Operators (producers and buyers) submit their sell and buy bids by 12:00 PM on the day prior to delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n

The price is formed by the meeting of supply and demand through an auction mechanism following the marginal price<\/strong> criterion (the last unit of energy accepted determines the price for everyone) and is a public market price that can be consulted daily on the GME<\/a> website.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Single National Price (PUN Index GME)<\/strong> arises from the MGP, which is the reference value for the energy component in Italian consumers’ bills.<\/span><\/p>\n

The PUN Index GME (National Single Price) is the benchmark index of the wholesale electricity market in Italy. It represents the average price at which suppliers purchase electricity on the Italian Power Exchange (IPEX) managed by GME (Energy Markets Operator).<\/span><\/p>\n

The PUN Index GME is calculated daily as the average of zonal prices (the different geographical areas into which the Italian grid is divided), weighted based on the volumes of energy traded each hour. Its value is not fixed; it fluctuates hour by hour and day by day depending on electricity demand and the cost of the raw materials needed to produce it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The PUN Index GME is a benchmark index for the Italian electricity market. Many electricity supply contracts, especially variable-price ones, are directly or indirectly linked to the PUN Index GME. If the PUN Index GME increases, the price of energy for the consumer also tends to rise; if it falls, savings can be seen on the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n

Example – Energy price: PUN Index GME + spread. This means that the price paid for energy will be equal to the PUN Index GME for that period, plus a margin (spread) set by the supplier.<\/span><\/p>\n
